Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman
The virtuoso partnership of England’s premier flatpicking guitarist and “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” (LIVE IRELAND) has by now brought its unique musical vision to twenty-two countries on five continents. Chris and Máire have performed at over 175 folk, Celtic, arts, harp and guitar festivals in Europe, the USA and Australasia and have given almost two thousand concerts in venues large and small - from the tiniest of historic churches in England, Germany and Italy to palaces in Kyoto and Istanbul, London’s Barbican, Sydney's Town Hall and the Philharmonie in Cologne. Together they have created one of the most distinctive voices in modern acoustic music. Their six duo and five solo CDs, instructional books and collaborations with many other luminaries of the Celtic, folk, swing jazz and bluegrass worlds express both the depth of their commitment to tradition and an eternally playful, curious and adventurous spirit. https://www.maireandchris.com/
Fifteen years after taking a short break (!) Sunderland-based folk singer Bill Jones is back on the UK folk scene We had the pleasure of Bill many years ago at Otley, and we are delighted to welcome her back.
With her lively style and unpretentious approach, she launched herself onto the UK folk scene in 1999, starting out by singing a couple of songs in local folk clubs, and learning her craft. In February 2001, less than a year after releasing her debut album Turn to Me, Bill won the Horizon (Best Newcomer) Award at the BBC Folk Awards.
Born in Staffordshire but now based in the North East for over 20 years, Bill plays accordion, piano, and Irish whistle, as well as having a sweet and beautiful voice. Bill's live set features gentle songs to tug at your heart, energetic sets to get your feet tapping, and tales to enthrall, all bound together by gentle humour.
Kitty Macfarlane is a songwriter and guitarist from Somerset, whose music is rich with visual imagery and written with an eco-eye. From the starling murmurations on the Somerset Levels to the lowly eel's epic transatlantic migration, and the small part we ourselves play in a much bigger picture, her songs are bound by the underlying theme of mankind's relationship with the wild. Kitty has recently been nominated for the Horizon Award in the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Her debut album Namer Of Clouds was one of The Guardian's Best Folk Albums of 2018 with airplay across BBC Radio 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music, meriting FATEA's award for Female Artist of the Year and being nominated for Album Of The Year in the fRoots Critics Poll. https://www.kittymacfarlane.com/
Flossie Malavialle is a French born singer who has been based in the North East of England since 2002. Several years on, she has become an accomplished performer playing at folk clubs and festivals all over the UK (and beyond) and supporting acts such as Fairport Convention and Show of Hands.
Flossie’s powerful yet sensitive rendition of songs combined with her quaint northern twang and humorous banter will no doubt entertain and leave you with a smile.
